Cataloochee Valley

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, NC
2018
This isolated Appalachian valley attracts visitors for its quiet beauty. Only hints of the people who once lived here remain. The National Park Service and a friends group hired us to do a brief consult and assessment: how might the story be told?

With National Park Service staff, descendant representatives, and the Great Smoky Mountains Association, we explored, listened, and conceived an experience. The brief document demonstrated that a solution was possible and served as a tool for further discussion and fundraising.

As of 2024, subsequent teams had completed design based on this assessment. Fabrication is on hold due to damage from Hurricane Helene.
